The main aim of the courses offered by The City College is to improve the general English language skills of students to enable them communicate effectively. The courses are suitable for students who just wish to improve their language skills or those who wish to reach a standard required for entry into higher education courses.

The fundamental skills of English speaking, listening, reading and writing are developed throughout the course. Traditional methods are combined with the latest methods and techniques. The acquisition of English skills is reinforced by extensive pair, group or teamwork under the constant guidance of the teacher.

 

Special Courses

The City College designs and teaches English courses to the specific requirements of organisations, such as companies or schools from abroad. These courses may be as short as one week or up to 12 weeks long and involve teaching from 3 to 6 hours a day. Social events and visits to places of interest can be incorporated in the programme to meet clientÂ’s requirements. Further details and fees available on request.

 

Entrance Requirements

No academic qualifications are required, but all applicants must be at least 18 years of age when they start their course.

On your arrival at The City College, you will take a written or oral test to ascertain your level of English, so that you can be placed in the right class for your level.

 

Examinations and Awards

Students attending general English courses are prepared and encouraged to take the Cambridge and/or Pitmans examinations, which are recognised worldwide. Students may also be prepared for the IELTS, a widely recognised test of English, administered by the British Council. Many Universities and Colleges accept the IELTS (subject to achieving a satisfactory standard) as meeting the English requirement for entry to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
